Famous for his pictorial maps, MacDonald Gill’s work is currently enjoying a significant public renaissance. His work attracted renewed interest  following the influential “Magnificent Maps” exhibition at the British Library (2010), and subsequent exhibitions at Brighton University (2011) and London Transport Museum (2012). Noted for his distinctive style, MacDonald Gill produced posters for London Transport, the Empire Marketing Board, and here for the wartime Government information service.

The first version of this poster was produced in 1942 as part of the war effort. Two later versions were produced in 1946 and 1949 each with a different heading and text in the lower right box. This example from 1946 is in very good condition. It has been folded but remains complete and free from paper loss or other attritional damage. The colours remain crisp, sharp, and deep.

This is a lovely poster by a designer whose work is much sought after. It can be found in both the National and State collections in Australia.
