Commissioned by SNCF, Raoul Dufy’s beautiful impressionist painting of his native Normandy makes a superb poster. Used domestically to promote the region, the international version for the US market carried a wider remit – “Discover France”. It joins that tranche of mid century SNCF posters created by truly exceptional artists.
The poster has been displayed and shows slight damage or loss at each corner, all consistent with its age. Small nicks at the edges have been stabilzed on the rear side with light archival tape. In the bottom right corner there is some small writing in ink – part of the “story” of this well travelled, 70 year poster.
